Happy New Year! We hope your 2018 was a great year and that your 2019 will be even better! It’s an incredible honor to serve our District residents, and I am proud of what we've accomplished thus far. We are looking forward to what this new year will bring.

History was made this month when Mayor Muriel Bowser was sworn in as the first female two-term mayor of the District of Columbia. What an honor it has been celebrating this accomplishment. Thank you Mayor Bowser for everything you do and your continued efforts in making the District of Columbia one of the greatest cities in the world!Â
The District of Columbia is home to a variety of professional and entrepreneurial multicultural women. I am honored to be recognized as one of this year's Washington, DC Walker's Legacy Power 15 honorees. Walker’s Legacy honors 150 women nationwide through its local #WLPower15 awards which take place in the organization’s 10-city footprint of New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Charlotte, Miami, Philadelphia, Houston, Dallas and Washington. The Walker’s Legacy Power Awards program is part of a national effort by the organization to recognize the achievements of notable business and community leaders. To all of the women who are also being honored, congratulations and continue making your marks on the community and the world!

Finally, I'd like to personally invite District residents in all 8 Wards to join us at DC Econ Unplugged! - Connecting YOU to DC's Economy taking place on January 31st. The event will feature our government agencies and leadership, but also highlight the arts, makers, musicians, pop-up mini workshops, business resources, real estate, small business and more. Please visit the "Save the Date" section of this eNewsletter for a link to more information about this event. The District Creatives Radio Show hosted by Savvy Cherise is a 30 minute program featuring interviews highlighting the work of millennials/young adult creatives in the city. The focus of the content is arts, entertainment, and the creative economy. The District Creative Radio Show will provide a platform for creatives to share the work and content they provide in this city and for the city. The show will also create a dialogue around the joys and pains of pursuing your passion, resources for district creatives, and balancing your passion project with your paycheck. These discussions will not only highlight current creatives but also guide the next wave of creatives in the District of Columbia.
The word had been on the streets since 2017 about a documentary that would chronicle the development of Go-Go – D.C.’s homegrown musical creation. Now, DC’s Go-Go documentary Straight Crankin will be cranking its way through the film festival circuit. This year, the film will be submitted to over 10 film festivals across the nation. Follow #StraightCrankin for more updates.

The DC Entertainment Office is pleased to recognize the Union Oyster Bar & Lounge as our January 2019 Location of the Month! With a mixture of modern and vintage décor, a melting pot of ethnic backgrounds and nationalities, Union District Oyster Bar & Lounge offers delicious food and an unrivaled beverage program with endless options. The Oyster Bar is located  in Union Market. The revitalized market, launched by EDENS, is located at the same site as the original Union Terminal Market, which opened in 1931. Union Terminal replaced Center Market, which had been open since 1871, but was torn down to make way for the National Archives. The Florida Avenue Market represents a very diverse and unique pocket of Washington, DC.
